The 1.x SOAP based API's are not supported by Release 11.00 of Content Manger. The 1.x API's were supplanted by the REST 2.x API's. For more information on this, please refer to our developer portal ( a username and password is required to proceed to this link.)

As part of our continuing effort to improve Scala Enterprise to be the most effective tool we can provide, Scala has added over 25 new features and made in excess of 265 enhancements to Content Manager, Player and Designer. With an emphasis on speed, performance and noise reduction, functional as well as creative features contribute to the significant upgrade of control, power and ease-of-use for both network managers and designers. It was also important that users would benefit from a reduction in ‘noise’ by applying more stringent workgroup rules, mitigating the risk of asset misplacement. To improve at-a-glance views of content usage and conditional playback though addition hyperlinks, as well as improved search functionality. The end result is that Release 11.00 is a more fluid, smarter and quicker user experience.

The following are the headline features for this release:

Speed and Performance

The core engines of Content Manager have been refactored, with a focus on speed, performance and noise reduction. As a result, your UI should see a significant improvement in Performance.  The work done for this release in the first step in upgrading performance and will continue into future releases.

Here is an illustration of the improved response time for Playlists, which is a result of the work done for this release. The example playlists contained 7 items.

As you can clearly see the addition of sub-playlists was exponential to the point were the test to add 12000 sub-playlist via the API’s was abandoned after 9 hours. We calculated that it would complete in several days, compared to the same test which completed in under 30 seconds.

Additionally, Windows 8.1 is now certified for use with Content Manager and Designer.

Playback Audit Module (PAM)

As part of the refactoring, we moved PAM to a separate database that was efficient for for high write volumes of billing records.

MongoDB is now used for storage because it is a cross platform document oriented database and is also ideally suited for Big Data storage

It has several advantages, including:

  • Efficiency for high write volumes of billing records.
  • Storage of both Summary and Transactional details.
  • Highly transparent data storage
  • Easier use by 3rd Part Integrations, due to it's structure in JSON-like documents using dynamic schemas called BSON.
  • Easy consumption by JavaScript based solutions.

Workgroup Rule Changes

We have renamed View Workgroups to Shared with Workgroups for clarity. Changes to the Workgroup Rules were made minimize the risk of asset misplacement.

Publish Locations

SSH File Transfer Protocol (SFTP) can now be used as a Publish Location. Content Manager's SFTP client runs on a secure channel using SSH.

This function was tested using:

OpenSSH_6.0p1 Debian-4+deb7u2,

OpenSSL 1.0.1e 11 Feb 2013.

Please do not confuse SFTP (SSH File Transfer Protocol) with Simple FTP, or FTPS (FTP over SSL).

Web Application Description Language (WADL)

Content Manager provides a WADL of the REST API to facilitate the development of custom applications.

Search Improvements

Player search has been enhanced to allow you to search for a player based on the Player's Universally Unique Identifier, or be partially matching to an asset in your library. Workgroup Rules are also adhered to in Filters and Searches.

Duplication of Playlist Items

A Duplicate button has been added to the Menu tab in the Playlist items view.  Having the ability to duplicate items in a playlist without having to reload them give you the ability to get the job done faster, as in the past, you had to add the media item again and reset all of its properties. It will now be easier to add multiple instances of the same asset with a playlist.

Password Resets

We have reintroduced the feature that allows users to reset their password at the next login.

API Documentation

Users with the proper Role permissions can now grant access to Content Manager's API documentation.

Delete a Folder

You are now able to delete a folder in the UI.
